Honoring America's Commitment to Liberty for the Next Generation

Renewing America’s Commitment to Liberty for the Next Generation

TFAS Teaching Freedom 250 Logo

As America celebrates its 250th birthday,
The Fund for American Studies is launching a bold national initiative to develop the next generation of courageous citizens.

Since 1967, The Fund for American Studies has been teaching young people about America’s Founding principles of individual liberty, personal responsibility and economic freedom. More than simply teaching the genius and importance of our nation’s Founding documents, new TFAS civics programs explore their philosophical underpinnings: the books, thinkers and enduring principles that shaped the Founders’ worldview.

America’s semiquincentennial is certainly a moment for celebration, but also a pivotal time to reset the conversation about who we are—and want to be—as a nation and why the Founders’ vision must endure.

Civics For Leaders

Educate, Equip, Inspire

TFAS is infusing America 250 and civic knowledge educational content into existing academic programs, including D.C. Academic Internship Programs, International Programs, Journalism Fellowships, High School Programs for students and teachers and Continuing Education seminars. Students will explore the ideas behind the Declaration, Constitution, natural rights, limited government, free markets and ordered liberty — not as history to memorize, but as living principles essential to a free society.

Civics and Economics in Action

STUDENTS

At this program, students don’t merely memorize government structures – they learn how to think using the “economic way of thinking.” They examine the incentives, trade-offs and unintended consequences of the decisions behind public policy  – from the Founding Fathers’ writing of the Constitution to current Supreme Court cases.

Through hands-on lessons, leadership training and real-world case studies, students leave this program with a powerful framework for understanding democracy – and their role in shaping it.

How the American Revolution was Financed with Paper Money

TEACHERS

Hosted by Dr. Farley Grubb, this program examined how the Second Continental Congress financed the American Revolution. From mid-1775 to early 1776, Congress debated multiple options before choosing to issue paper Continental dollars structured as zero-coupon bearer bonds. Dr. Grubb explained how this system was designed to work, why it was initially a rational solution and how later wartime pressures led to poor financial decisions that ultimately caused the collapse of the Continental dollar.

American Covenant: Trumbull's Declaration of Independence and the Exceptional Story of America by Rabbi Meir Soloveichik

Rabbi Dr. Meir Soloveichik delivered the Annual TFAS Neal B. Freeman All-Student Lecture. Rabbi Soloveichik explored why the text of the Declaration of Independence, and John Trumbull’s painting of the Signing, uniquely express the American idea: that the United States is a covenantal nation built on a text and on shared ideas.

Declaration of Independence Tours

TFAS guides students on a Declaration of Independence tour through Washington, D.C. From the National Archives, to the Jefferson Memorial to Signers Island, students connect the Founders’ ideas to America’s institutions and experience liberty, sacrifice and civic responsibility where history lives.

The Declaration's Influence Abroad by Anna Smith Lacey

How did the ideals of the United States Declaration of Independence resonate far beyond America’s borders? TFAS Alumna Anna Smith Lacey, Executive Director of the Hungary Foundation, led a discussion on the global influence of the American Founding and its enduring impact on European political thought and reform movements. Drawing on the experiences of 19th-century Hungarian intellectuals such as Sándor Bölöni Farkas – often described as the “Hungarian Tocqueville” – the talk explored how the American democratic experiment inspired generations of European reformers seeking liberty, constitutionalism and self-government. Lacey also reflected on the broader transatlantic exchange of ideas between the United States and Hungary and why the principles of the Declaration continue to resonate in democratic societies today.

America 250 Washington Briefings

Washington Briefings give students behind-the-scenes access to key Washington institutions, pairing expert-led tours and lectures with America 250–themed discussions and visits to places like the U.S. Capitol, Department of State and the White House, bringing the Founding’s ideas to life in the nation’s capital.

The American Revolution and the Constitution

Yuval Levin, director of Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, will deliver a lecture to the TFAS Law Fellows on "The American Revolution and the Constitution."

Revitalizing Civic Education and America’s Founding Principles

The Fund for American Studies 2026 Annual and Regional Conferences, Developing Courageous Citizens: Revitalizing Civic Education and America’s Founding Principles, is the Annual Conference and a series of half-day forums around the country to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Join leaders, scholars, students and alumni as we showcase how TFAS programs can build a pipeline of courageous citizens to carry forward the American experiment.

America’s upcoming celebration provides a special opportunity to examine how we as a nation teach the American Founding. Unfortunately, the Founders’ own narrative about what America is and means has been purposefully eroded in our culture and classrooms, almost to the point of replacement. Without action, future generations risk losing the appreciation of history and civic knowledge essential to preserving our Republic. Our conference intends to present a range of discussions about history and civics education, the founding principles and how they are applied today and inspirational patriotic presentations.

Sponsorship Opportunities & Benefits

Sponsorships to the 2026 TFAS Regional Conference: Developing Courageous Citizens provide a unique opportunity to partner with The Fund for American Studies in advancing civic renewal at a defining moment for our nation.

As a sponsor, you will help convene today’s leading voices in liberty, support the development of programs that strengthen civic education and inspire the next generation to carry forward America’s founding ideals. Sponsors will receive recognition in event materials and communications, as well as exclusive opportunities to attend special events and engage directly with speakers, scholars and TFAS student leaders.
